Hello to whoever found this review, and if you are reading, then I hope you heal quickly. I broke my right ankle, and required surgery. The surgery was more extensive than my Dr. thought, so my non weight bearing phase was at least twice as long.I am an accident waiting to happen on regular crutches. I am 53, in fairly good shape, but I broke my left fibula close to my knee with a knee sprain, in addition to breaking my right ankle- So crutch walking on the left leg was a nightmare- but that's what I did for a week while my ankle was healing before my surgery. Initially, I used mostly an office chair like a scooter in the house to get around since it was hard to bear weight on my left leg. See, here's the hook- we didn't know my left fibula was broken! I just thought I pulled muscles when I did a very ungraceful ankle twist/roll/sit. It took a while for all the MRI's, x-rays, and stuff to get done, and to make a long story short, I was walking fairly well 4 weeks later when I had my surgery to repair the damage to my ankle..
I was told no weight bearing for 2 weeks after surgery. Crutching was still hard, and I found a hands free peg leg type of crutch that I tried. This had your bad leg bent and strapped to a knee platform and nothing to hold onto- so if you lost your balance, you fell! 15 minutes later, and it was in the box, shipped back in favor of a knee scooter. These scooters are great, but have their limitations, so I was back to regular crutches at times. Back to the Dr for my 2 week check, and I was non weight bearing for another 2 weeks. AARGGGHHHHHH!
Then I found the OnlyOne crutch. I was not too sure since my first product didn't work out for me, but I ordered it anyway. It came today. It's GREAT. The best part is that your bad leg is not strapped to anything, so if you lose your balance, you can save your fall, or put your foot down gently to save yourself from falling- while using the crutch to find your balance again. And the crutch goes to just below your armpit, with a handle for your forearm to keep your knee on the platform. Or you can let your arm hang down and hold the crutch like a cane at the bottom for better control and balance. When using the forearm method, you now have 2 hands free again while walking pretty securely. I feel just as secure on this OnlyOne crutch as I do on the regular 2 cruches, but you can't carry anything on 2 crutches. You are very limited. With this only one crutch your independence has returned, your hands are free, you can carry stuff, and it helps support you while standing at the sink brushing your teeth, doing your hair, or loading the dishwasher, cooking.... and your good leg is not supporting all your weight, so it doesn't get stressed- especially in my case. Need I go on?
Just one hint- make sure your knee platform is very tight so it does not slip down. And use a cane on the opposite side while learning how to crutch walk. Move the cane forward with your crutch at the same time, and you will quickly learn the balance point- to then ditch the cane and move to the forearm method and free up your hands and continue to move forward. I hesitated to spend the $$ since this cannot be rented, but it's worth every $. For the freedom and the support of your good leg, it helps distribute your weight evenly and avoid other complications of leg, hip, and back pain.
I wish I had found this at the initial fall and break- but even for the next 2 weeks, it's worth the investment.
