Product Description

The new MyStudio AL1 and AL2 accent lights are the perfect addition to any MyStudio tabletop photo studio or any other photography setup. Accent lights provide the photographer with additional light and creative options that are not possible when using a single key light, which is important to many photographers. Because the accent lights are independent and not fixed in a permanent position, they can be moved around and positioned wherever the photographer chooses to create the desired effect. Some of the types of lighting that can be created using the MyStudio AL1 and AL2 Accent Lights are: High Contrast - this is created by adding more light to one side and leaving the other side in relative shadow. This effect can be varied by the distance the light is placed from the item on either side and removing or reducing the intensity of the front key light. Rim Lighting - by placing the lights slightly behind and to one or both sides of the subject, it is possible to create a "rim light" which is a highlight along the outside edge. This is especially effective with glass and other objects of a translucent nature, but can add a nice effect to almost any type of item. Back Lighting - just as it sounds, back lighting is produced by placing a light behind the subject. In product photography back lighting is often created by placing the accent light above and behind the item which creates a pleasing highlight along the top of the object. This effect is also used to create separation from the background. Additional Key Light - sometimes a photographer just wants more light on a subject, either to be able to use a higher shutter speed or narrower aperture without increasing ISO. By adding one or more accent lights to the front in addition to the main key light in any MyStudio tabletop studio kit, the amount of light is instantly doubled or even tripled, thus giving the photographer the additional light he desires.

MyStudio 5000K "Daylight" Fluorescent Dual Bulb Accent Lights (AL2-2) Review

We take thousands of macro photos each week for our business and have been trying to buy the best lighting for decades. The first lights we used in the 1980's melted our expensive early digital camera. Nowadays you can get very good cool white LED lights and cfl's which have low heat. But these lights are not exactly optimal daylight, and produce "hot spots" and can require the use of a tent or diffusers to spread the light evenly. This system of two bulbs in each stand givea plenty of optimal color light which is diffused enough. The color is optimal for photography. The diffusion covers for the bulbs can be tricky to install; but those covers are workable. There is a small "L" bar at the bottom of each lamp so you can clamp or screw or whatever the lamps to a table; if you don't clamp it they will not be very stable; we are using inexpensive 2 inch "C" clamps available at hardware stores. There is a switch at the bottom of each bulb, which makes it easy to turn each light on and off, the specs don't mention that excellent feature. When you install the lamps make sure your follow the directions and turn the bulbs to lock them in place; Amazon had a great price on two of these lamps, and the prices change, so if you hang tight and wait you might luck out, but for our business they are priceless.
