4" Starlock Cushion Seat Size: 17.25" x 17.25" Review

This seems to be a well made air cell cushion that is comfortable for long term use. The individual cells are perceptible to the user but are not uncomfortable.

It comes with a black fabric cover and a double acting air pump. The cover is rip-stop nylon except for stretch Jersey knit on the rear two thirds of the top. The cover's bottom is a tough rubberized material with two strips of Velcro loop running front to back near the sides. There is a small pouch at the front of the cover to hold the `Starlock' squeeze bulb.

The `Starlock' feature works by using air pressure to pinch off the little air inlet to each cell so that air can no longer shift from one cell to another, and does increase the user's stability somewhat.

I had hoped it would let me completely deflate some of the cells to relieve pressure points, but it does not seem practical. The recommended method of using a folded towel or other object to compress the desired cells while sitting on the cushion is too painful if one already has a pressure sore. And compressing and locking cells while not sitting on the cushion prevents the remaining cells from contouring to the user's body shape.

A user might also have problems with perspiration in hot weather, as they would with any other impermeable unventilated cushion, but if you are already sitting on an incontinence pad or a Hoyer lift sling that becomes irrelevant.

It would be good if someone would invent a safety device for air cushions in general, to warn if air pressure is too low to support the user. I improvised with a pressure transducer and a gauge from a BP cuff, but the pressure is less than 1 PSI and very sensitive to the user's movements.
